Beko

Making a fridge explain itself to the person standing in front of it.

Home appliances — connected product

The situation

Beko wanted a more usable programme for its fridges. The task was communication: helping a person and an appliance understand each other.

The appliance's own controls were the interface, and a domestic kitchen is not a context where anyone reads instructions.

What we did
  • Research into refrigerator functions and how people actually operate them, deliberately starting from user needs rather than the feature list.
  • Improved the onboard screens so the appliance's functions became easier to use.
  • Mapped the user's journey through the product and built the information architecture for both the screens and the supporting material.

What changed

A connected appliance whose features are reachable by the person using it — the difference between a smart product and a sold one.
